What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In addition to helping incoming students feel more prepared for college, Emerge is also designed to help students explore majors, careers, and campus opportunities in STEM areas.

You do not have to be serious, or even curious, about STEM to participate in Emerge - all students, regardless of academic interests, can benefit from the program!

What makes a good Emerge candidate?

If you are a PES student with an open mind and you are excited about the Emerge program, you are a great candidate! See more on program eligibility, expectations, and benefits.

Is Emerge only for incoming PES students?

Yes, Emerge is only for incoming students in the President's Emerging Scholars Program who are beginning their journey at the University.

Do I have to be admitted into a specific college to participate in Emerge?

No, All incoming PES students are encouraged to apply! Participants do not have to be admitted to a specific STEM-related college or major. 

How many students will be in the program?

There will be a total of 90 students participating in the Emerge Summer STEM program.

How do I get the $1,500 I earn for participating?

Payments will be processed at the end of the program in one lump sum.

How do I apply?

How long is the program?

The program is 3 weeks long and will take place from July 13 – August 3, 2024.

Do I have to stay on campus the whole program?

Participants are required to live on campus in a residence hall during the duration of the program. If desired, students can go home on weekends.

I have been admitted to the Pathways program. What should I expect?

Congratulations on your admission into the Health Profession Pathways program! Pathways students are required to attend the Emerge Summer STEM Program to kick off your pathways experience. We do ask that you fill out the Emerge application if you have not done so, to confirm your spot and commitment to the summer program. As a pathways student you are guaranteed a spot in the Emerge Summer STEM Program.

As a Pathways student, you will experience a unique track where you will have the opportunity to connect with your pathways coaches and advising staff while getting hands-on experience in STEM and the medical field. You also will get acclimated as a cohort and explore resources, academic success strategies and so much more!

Do I have to live on campus? Where will I live?

All participants will be assigned a roommate and a double room in on-campus housing with Housing & Residential Life.

Housing is free and provided as part of program participation.

Will I have a roommate?

Yes, you will be assigned one roommate in a double room who is also participating in Emerge.

Are all my meals provided?

Yes, all of your meals will be provided.

Can I have my car on campus?

You are strongly encouraged to leave your car at home. On-campus activities are all within walking distance and you do not need a car. All transportation to off-site excursions will be provided. In addition, there are free campus buses and easy access to public transportation.

Note: If you chose to bring your car, note that parking on campus can be expensive and is the responsibility of the student.

Can I go home on weekends or evenings?

We ask that you stay on campus each evening. On the weekends, you are free to either go home or stay on campus.

Will this be my room for the school year?

No. You will be required to move out of your room at the end of Emerge. If you are living in on-campus housing for the academic year, be sure to apply and confirm with Housing & Residential Life.
