General Questions

Do I have to live on campus to attend?

Nope! You are not required to live on campus to attend the Emerge Summer Leadership Institute. However, it is your responsibility to arrive for each session on-time.

For those interested in living on campus, we have FREE housing in an on-campus residence hall. In the application, you will designate your living arrangements for the duration of the Institute.

How long is the Institute?

The Emerge Summer Leadership Institute is a one-week, intensive program. The Emerge Institute offers two separate one-week sessions. Participants may only attend one of the two sessions. The first session will take place from July 26 to July 31, and the second session will be held from August 2 to August 7. Please choose the session that best fits your schedule, as space is limited and participants can only enroll in one session.

How is Emerge different than Orientation?

New Student Orientation introduces students to the University of Minnesota and provides essential information about academics, advising, and campus resources. All new students participate in Orientation as part of their transition to the University.

Emerge is not an additional orientation. Instead, it is a leadership and community-building experience created specifically for President’s Emerging Scholars. Emerge offers a smaller, cohort-based environment where PES students can build relationships, develop leadership skills, and gain confidence before their first semester begins.

Students are required to attend Orientation ahead of attending the Emerge Summer Leadership Institute.

Are meals provided?

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided to all participants, regardless of if they are staying on-campus or commuting.

Is Emerge only for incoming PES students?

Yes! Emerge is only for incoming students in the President's Emerging Scholars (PES) Program who are beginning their journey at the University.

How many students will be in the Institute?

The Emerge Summer Leadership Institute has a capacity for 150 students for each one-week session

What does the average day look like in Emerge?

You can expect to engage in various workshops, team-building exercises, and seminars to achieve the Institute’s objectives. You can see a sample schedule for the Institute here.

Is there a cost to attend the Institute?

No, there is no cost to attend the Emerge Summer Leadership Institute for eligible PES students.

Can I work during the program?

We ask that students do not work during the duration of their Emerge session. If you are working, we ask that you request time off during Emerge so you can be fully present for all activities. If you need an accommodation letter to submit with this request, please email Jessica P. Cameron at [email protected]
