Eligibility, Benefits, & Expectations

Emerge is designed to promote student success by providing new students with the academic skills, sense of belonging, and transition support needed to succeed in college.

In this program, participants will live and dine in a residence hall on campus, attend robust mini-lectures and industry visits, and other fun activities that provide valuable insights into what college life is like at the University of Minnesota. Below are the general eligibility requirements, program benefits, and expectations for participants.

Program Eligibility

In order to participate in Emerge, students must be:

  • admitted incoming first-year PES student
  • available to live on campus from July 13 – August 3, 2024
  • have completed Freshman Orientation before July 13*
  • highly motivated to commit to the program’s objectives

Program Benefits

  • Earn 1 elective credit towards your undergraduate degree
  • Earn $1,500 for satisfactory participation
  • Receive high touch mentoring from staff, faculty, and current undergrad and graduate students
  • Experience a customized curriculum that includes algebraic thinking and STEM curriculum exploration
  • Gain insight into real STEM careers and industries through off-site visits in the Twin Cities metro area
  • Get a jump-start on campus life, make friends, and gain early access to campus resources and student support services
  • Feel prepared to begin your first year at the University

Program Expectations

The 2024 Emerge Summer STEM program will be held on campus, with all aspects of the program offered in person. As an Emerge participant, you are expected to:

  • live on campus (in provided housing) for the duration of the program,
  • build community with the other 90 Emerge participants,
  • actively participate in all courses, weekday excursions, and workshops.
  • Weekends are free days! You may leave Fridays after all programming concludes. You are expected to be back on campus in time for Monday morning classes.
